Acne is a common disorder that causes whiteheads, blackheads and cysts on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. The cause of acne is often multi-factorial – resulting from a combination of hormones, bacteria, oil gland activity, and plugged hair follicles. Having an occasional acne pimple or cyst is normal for most people and can be managed with over-the-counter medications. However, for many prescription treatment may be necessary in order to minimize its effects and prevent permanent scarring. Treatment may include topical medication, oral medication, chemical peels, or extraction of clogged pores. It is important to remember when starting acne treatment that there is no instant cure – it may take a few weeks to months before you see results. Sometimes a treatment that works for one person may not work for another, and sometimes breakouts can get worse before they get better.
